The Surprising Connection Between Tarot and Quantum Physics
When I started out reading tarot, I thought that it was based on some magical, mysterious process. No one could know how it worked; it was all down to the fairies of the universe. But what if there was a perfectly rational explanation? What if it was really quantum physics?
There are some questions about tarot and quantum physics that might be worth exploring.
Background of Tarot and Quantum Physics
Firstly, let’s define each term:
A tarot deck consists of 78 cards that contain a structure that reflects human life in philosophical and material ways. The 22 Major Arcana cards show the powerful archetypes we all encounter throughout life. The 16 Court cards describe human personalities with great accuracy. The 40 Minor Arcana portray situations from having an idea, to team working, even poverty.
Quantum physics is a branch of science that deals with the behavior of subatomic particles and the fundamental properties of matter. Some concepts explored in quantum physics include uncertainty, entanglement, and the observer effect.
The Intersection of Tarot and Quantum Physics
While it might appear that the two things have nothing in common, to some of us readers there are obvious but unprovable connections. The observer effect in quantum physics means that a particle may change its state when there is an observer present. Similarly, the process of laying down cards and interpreting them for another person may affect their thoughts, actions, and decisions. It’s an act of observation; the observer (reader) and observed (querent).
Some cards appear to resonate with concepts from quantum physics. For example, the Hanged Man card with its suspended (not executed) figure embodies both stillness and movement. It means that things may not be what they appear to be. And that there may be paradoxical truths to be revealed to one who cares to look deeper.
